Today we talked about Cerebral Palsy in Ms. Packer's class. I brought in a wonderful true story about 5 amazing little girls with Cerebral Palsy who had a dream of becoming ballerinas and they made their dreams come true. "Ballerina Dreams" is a beautiful story about how these little girls over came their obstacles and were able to achieve their dreams. Far too often we give up on our dreams because we don't believe they are attainable but these little girls no matter their abilities showed us that with a little help it can be done.
A famous song I once heard from a smart little cricket named Jimney is the perfect introduction to this book. "When you wish upon a star makes no difference who you are. Anything your heart desires will come to you. If your heart is in your dreams no request is too extreme. When you wish upon a star as dreamers do..."
Ballerina Dreams is about Nicole, Shekinah, Veronica, Abbey and Monica. Each one of them unique and their own challenges but with practice and persistence they were able to get better and stronger and improve in areas they once thought impossible.
The kids in Ms. Packer's class loved the story and asked many questions. We did a recap at the end and they were able to remember lots of things about children with Cerebral Palsy. I love to see how open and receptive the kids are to learning about people who are different and have special needs.
